It’s not uncommon for people to think “Is this what I want to do with my life? Is this where I want to be?” It could be born out of frustration, circumstances or the prospect of a new year and a fresh start.
If you answered yes to the above, then I offer you the most spectacular of high fives! I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous, but well done for putting yourself first.
Sadly, not everyone is in that enviable position. For a multitude of reasons, you could be thinking: “How can I improve my life? Where do I start?”
I’m right here with you!
This is something that will help to kick start your journey into self-improvement!
New challenges For Self Improvement
My focus was narrowed to the extent that I didn’t even consider what I’d do after all the excitement died down. As a result, I struggled to get back to normality and felt increasingly frustrated with daily life.
However, I often find inspiration and creativity blossoms at the end of such stagnant periods in life.
My determination has piqued and I have put a plan into place to ‘straighten my crown’ so to speak and to create a better life for myself. One that is full of adventures, creativity and improvement.
I am all for self-improvement in the coming year. So much so that I worked on creating a list of goals for the year ahead to have a strong focus and solid measurement tool for my accomplishments.
Follow my simple steps below to lead YOUR best life!
Setting Smart Goals: Small steps to self improvement!
Often, the first step is the most difficult and this is because it requires a little self-investigation to figure out what you would like to achieve.
Some of you may already know what it is that you want but for others, you may need to dig deep to fully understand what you feel is lacking or what your heart most desires.
There are different ways in which we can approach our self-investigation including addressing a hierarchy of needs. But this may be digging a little too deep for this exercise. You’re looking for something easier to follow to start moving your life in the right direction.
Therefore, looking at the basic elements that everyone has in common, I’ve narrowed down the following categories:
- Bucket list
For this self-investigation, you’ll need a pen and paper, or a blank word document open on your PC. The best way of scratching the surface just now is to make bullet points based on the following categories.
We spend on average 40 hours per week at work. If you don’t enjoy your current employment those 40 hours can feel like a lifetime! Therefore it is important to ask yourself the following:
- Are you unhappy in your current job or field of work?
- Do you long for a change of career?
- Or want to learn a new skill?
Think carefully about what you would change in an ideal world and be honest with yourself.
Thinking about your interactions with friends and family, would you be happier if spent more or less time with the people in your life?
The relationships we keep are a reflection of ourselves but also have an impact on our mood and outlook.
Therefore it is crucial to have a strong network of people in our lives, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it should be a large network.
Some important questions to ask are:
- Do you spend enough time with the people you care about?
- Are there people in your life who make you feel less than worthy or unhappy?
- Do the people you surround yourself with add value to your life?
Honest answers to these questions will help you decide on what action you should take whether that’s making more of an effort with your circle. Or maybe it’s culling the circle to a small number of trusted friends and family.
Digging deeper into your body and mind for this point are you content with everything about yourself?
Would you like to make any changes such as become fitter or healthier? Or eat better and not drink alcohol as much? Do you want to quit smoking or take more time to relax in the evening before bed?
It’s always important to analyse ourselves and our behaviour to make your life better and become content in our own bodies.
Once you feel happy in your own skin, you will feel capable of taking on any challenge, large or small.
Money is possibly the biggest stressor for everyone and there rarely seems to be enough of it to go around.
However, sometimes we do end up living beyond our means and there is always a surprise expense waiting to happen. Whether it’s a car or home repairs, or extra bills, it’s always better to have a little safety net to avoid getting into debt.
Therefore it’s no surprise that money and budgeting can weigh on the mind quite a bit.
What are your main goals for this year? Do you want to clear off any debt, buy a new car or buy a house?
It’s wise to create a budget of how much you currently spend and what you spend on. Then you can assess whether or not it is feasible to make cuts each month to ensure you are in better financial standing and achieve your goals.
This is a fun one. If you could do anything this year what would it be?
Do you want to travel somewhere you’ve never been to before? Do you want to run a marathon, or even ride a mechanical bull?
Think about what intrigues and excites you, write it down and let’s nail this!
Now, you might be thinking “Louise, this is all well and good, but it doesn’t sound like an easy task.”
Well, firstly not everything worth doing is easy. Sorry to burst your bubble. Secondly, It’s really not as bad as it looks. In the famous words of Douglas Adams “Don’t Panic!”
You have made a list of bullet points for each category that applies to you (or all of them) and that’s one step closer to achieving your goals!
To make your list achievable let’s break it down by the year – so what you want to achieve by the end of the year. Then we’ll do a breakdown by month – what you will do each month to create the best life for yourself!
By breaking everything down it really doesn’t seem as daunting and it also helps to keep your focus to achieve everything you want.
Trust me, this does make it much easier!
Goal Assessment For Self Improvement
This year, I’m all about bettering myself and improving my skills. I am dedicated to taking better photographs and improving my skills with Photoshop and Lightroom.
Another massive smart goal on my list is to build a fantastic community with Geez Louise. I want to be able to enhance your lives as much as my own by giving you rich content and providing you with inspiration!
I feel like last year went by so fast and my head was well and truly involved with wedding planning, job hunting, house hunting all of the big things! This year I want to make more of an effort to be social.
My family and friends are important to me and it’s about time I made the effort to show everyone how special they are to me.
This is quite a big one for me. I want to get my body into better shape. Both physically and mentally.
Like most people heading into a new year and a fresh start, I want to get into better shape and take care of myself. I want to be more cautious about what enters my body in terms of food and other people’s influences.
I will be focusing on working out and eating healthier. Follow my journey here!
Meditation is also big on my list this year. Quite often we may make more of an effort with our physical health, but taking care of our mental health is equally as important. Will this be on your list too?
As I said previously, money seems to be the biggest stress factor for everyone and the hubby and I are no different. This year we are working towards buying our forever home.
It’s fair to say I have the travelling bug! This year, the aim is to travel more to places that hubby and I have never been to. We want to embrace everything that is good about other locations.
However, I realise that travel can be expensive and goes against us trying to save every penny for our forever home. But I do love a challenge so I’ll be watching the holiday and city break deal sites like a hawk!
As you can see, by breaking the elements down it really isn’t as daunting as it may seem at first. AND you are more likely to stick to your plan and achieve your ultimate self improvement like a boss!
Now obviously your month to month goals can and will change. However, you’re making the task manageable by having to think about what you want and how you will achieve it.
